Through the unique
partnership with Sussex Yacht Club, the Club is able to arrange some dinghy
training courses in the locked canal in Southwick two miles to the east of
Shoreham-by-Sea in April and in September 2006.
The clubhouse, founded in 19th century, offers the use of the classroom and
cooking facilities on the upper floor
and the changing and storage facilities on the ground floor, covering the
most of the course syllabus.
This
is an ideal opportunity for students to gain vital experience. The
instructor-led course is held at Southwick Clubhouse (upper left) on
Saturdays and Sundays starting at 9am and finishing
around 4pm. Students can go out sailing or improve initial skills in the non-tidal water of the canal (right) for up to three hours before the lunch
time at the clubhouse.
After the
lunch, they could have an opportunity to sail out beyond the Canal Lock onto the sea within the harbour or the open sea beyond the harbour,
or sail down the tidal river towards the modern Shoreham clubhouse (lower
left) on the historic waterside property site. All depend on the weather
conditions
No formal training qualifications are
provided, but experienced sailors are there for advice, and
the safety boat cover is provided.
